“Lights off! Night in Picture books” – exhibition at the Rosenheim Municipal Gallery

From March 24 to June 10, 2018 a very special exhibition can once again be seen at the Rosenheim Municipal Gallery (Städtische Galerie Rosenheim), where a series of illustration-in-picturebooks-themed events have been organized over the past several years.

How many different facets does the night unite under its mantle? And how much light can be found even in darkness? Frequently there is something sinister, something frightening about it, with its ghosts and its nightmares – yet it is also a source of inspiration and imagination, especially to artists.

Night has always been an important and complex theme in Quint Buchholz’s pictures. Thus it comes as no surprise that this collective exhibition will feature a large number of evening and night paintings by him, co-author of Dorothée Kreusch-Jacob’s “Sun, Moon and Evening Star – the Great Collection of Lullabies” (Hanser, 2017). The oldest picture to be shown was created over thirty years ago – the newest ones are from 2017.

Besides pictures by Quint Buchholz the exhibition, curated by literary critic and author Christine Knödler, will also feature works by Tatjana Hauptmann, Regina Kehn, Ole Könnecke, Mattias de Leeuw, Sophia Martineck, Dorothée de Monfreid, Nele Palmtag, Henriette Sauvant, Einar Turkowski, Julie Völk, Henning Wagenbreth and Mehrdad Zaeri.

More information will be posted here soon, and can also be found on the Rosenheim Municipal Gallery’s website.

Slava Polunin’s “Alchemy of Snowness” published in English

In May 2017 “The Alchemy of Snowness”, the story of the world-famous clown, artist, and “Master of Absurd Poetry” (DIE ZEIT, 2007) Slava Polunin, is published in English by Australian publisher Wilkinson. Written in enchantingly poetic prose, the book traces the artistic journey of the founder of the legendary Licedei (Thespians) theater and creator of “Slava’s Snowshow”, which has been travelling around the world since 1993. Slava has received numerous international awards for his work, including the Lawrence Olivier Award and the Triumph Award.

The text, a must-read for anyone intrigued by the creative process and for those longing for a little magic in their lives, features 27 pictures by Quint Buchholz. The intimate coalescence of the text and its illustrations mirror the author’s and illustrator’s connectedness and mutual appreciation. They have known each other personally for many years, and many of their shared interests come together in this very special book: their sense of slowness, their love for snow, and especially their attentive eye for the absurdities and ambiguities of life.

The book will premier in London on May 23, 2017. More information is available on the website of Waterstones, which will be hosting a book reading with Slava on that day.

"I am a storyteller, and you don’t have to believe anything I say. You can question any event I’ve described here. But believe one thing:
FANTASY IS ONLY A PREMONITION OF REALITY, AND DREAMS ARE MEANT TO COME TRUE.
Otherwise, what’s the use in dreaming?"

New edition of “Gregor or Where Dreams Can Carry You” published

In February of 2017 a new edition of this amusing little tale, written by Friedrich Ani and illustrated by Quint Buchholz, was published by Sanssouci. The dreamy-eyed, peripatetic penguin Gregor now experiences his adventures at the South Pole and in Upper Bavaria in a more slender pocket format.

“An enchantingly ironic story about a low-brow and yea-sayer culture, but also about the courage of being different” (Austrian Library Association, 2006)

“a stylistic and poignant bravura piece” (Buchkultur, 2006)

“With Ani and Buchholz, two people have found each other who fit together splendidly, on the humoristic level (charmingly eccentric) and the imaginative (surpassing place and time). … A wonderfully whimsical story.” (Südwestpresse, 2007)

“an encouragement for dreaming, very imaginative and full of subtle wit. And Buchholz’s wonderful pictures, into which one immerses oneself immediately and without any further encouragement.” (Weilheimer Tagblatt, 2006)
